A
Tradition of Giving

From Project H.E.R.O. to the ICCF Scholarship Program, the Foundation
is focused on implementing programs that make a difference. Many generous
contributors have offered their strong support, and now you can help
increase building safety throughout the world by making
a contribution.

Project H.E.R.O. CD

To help your chapter
or organization set up and run a Project H.E.R.O. team for helping disabled
American veterans, the ICC Foundation has created a helpful Project
H.E.R.O. CD. The instructive CD provides the tools and templates necessary
to create a team, select a veteran, raise financial and non-financial
support, and complete a successful project. Every county, city and town
has the ability to mobilize a Project H.E.R.O. team. ICC Chapters will
receive a copy of the CD to educate members about this unique volunteer
opportunity.

CODiE
Promotes Safety
One way to educate children during Building Safety Week, or any time during
the year, is with the help of CODiE the Cougar, ICC’s code-booktoting
cartoon character. CODiE is featured in the Foundation’s Building
Safety Activity Book, and shares fire prevention tips and
teaches kids about building safety issues such as escape routes, handrails
and electrical outlets. Many building departments use the books as part
of community outreach efforts in local elementary schools, or to keep
children occupied while parents talk with code enforcement staff in the
building department.

Partnering
with Pragma
for Afghanistan
ICCF has partnered with Pragma
Corp., an international management organization, for capacity development
of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (MUDH) of Afghanistan.
MUDH is responsible for urban management, including facilitating access
to housing for Afghanistan citizens. The capacity development program
includes the review of existing Russian-based codes and systems, the current
state of code enforcement, and improvement recommendations that will increase
the Ministry’s capacity in rebuilding Afghanistan. Initial efforts will
focus on the capital city of Kabul.

Rewards
for Giving Back

As the end of the year approaches, consider making a tax-deductible

$5,000
Raised at Silent Auction
Money usually
doesn't buy happiness, unless you're Habitat for Humanity-Orlando. Thanks
to the overwhelming support of donors, bidders and all other participants,
the ICCF Silent
Auction held during the Annual Conference was a huge success. Unusual
items such as artwork, a custom poker chip set, golf packages, and specialty
gift baskets were donated by various groups, organizations and chapters
to benefit Habitat for Humanity-Orlando.

CEO Weiland

The ICC Board of Directors
promoted the association's Chief Operating Officer, Rick Weiland, to the
position of Chief
Executive Officer. Weiland succeeds James Lee Witt.
Board of Directors Immediate Past President Henry Green introduced Weiland
as the new CEO during the Opening Session of the 2006
ICC Annual Conference. "We're confident that Rick will, through his
knowledge, skills and background, lead this organization and provide the
type of leadership necessary to carry ICC into the future," Green told conference
delegates.
Weiland has been ICC's COO for the past three years. "Obviously, I am very
pleased with the Board's decision and ready to tackle the challenge of leading
the International Code Council," Weiland said. "I will continue to reach
out to members and stakeholders to ensure their voices are heard as we move
forward."
“I am so excited, after an exhaustive, seven-month national search led by
the number one executive search firm in the country that Rick has been asked
by the ICC Board of Directors to serve as CEO,” Witt said. “He is a natural
leader – dedicated, relentless, innovative – with a ‘can-do’ and ‘get-it-done’
approach. Like me, he has a passion for wanting to make the world a better
and safer place to live and raise our families.”

On the national front,
both the ICC and the ICCF will host a range of activities to further public
safety awareness across the nation and around the world. These Washington,
DC based activities include the Foundation's event honoring
Silent Defenders and ICC's Capitol Hill Day, during which the ICC Board
and staff, committee and chapter leadership meet expansively with Congress
to discuss and promote ICC
legislative priorities that support building and fire safety.

As detailed in the Hamilton
Journal News, ground was broken recently on the Project
H.E.R.O. pilot site in Ohio. Plans for Vietnam veteran Shelby Bowling's
home include a $75,000 to $80,000 addition with a wheelchair-accessible
entrance, and a bedroom and bathroom on the home's first floor. "A few volunteer
hours and tools is all it takes to improve a disabled veteran's life—to
give them the freedom they so richly deserve," commented Project H.E.R.O.
Campaign Chairperson General Wesley Clark.
2007
Silent Defenders Wanted
An
exciting part of Building Safety Week is honoring heroes of building and
fire safety. If you know an individual or organization that has made a
difference by improving the lives of others through building safety and
fire prevention, nominate them for the 2007
Silent Defender Award. Nominations will be accepted by e-mail, mail
or fax through Oct. 16, 2006.
Mobilizing
Egyptian Code Enforcement System
The ICC Foundation is working closely with Egypt’s Housing and Building
National Research Center (HBRC) to develop a comprehensive code enforcement
system for the country. While still early in the program, Foundation staff
have already met with the Governor of Giza who shared his thoughts on
the Capacity Development Program.
The program is designed to analyze the current status of code enforcement
in the country, and develop recommendations on how to increase the capacity
of current staff and the enforcement system. Staff are gathering information
from various jurisdictions and community leaders as well as conducting
workshops with Egyptian-based construction industry leaders.
Michigan
Agency Volunteers as State Coordinator
Henry L. Green, Immediate
Past President of the ICC Board of Directors and Executive Director of the
Bureau of Construction Codes and Fire Safety for Michigan Department of
Labor and Economic Growth, has volunteered his agency staff to be the Michigan
State
Coordinator for Project H.E.R.O. In this role, Green and his staff will
facilitate communication between local projects and the national Project
H.E.R.O. program.
Foundation
Helps in Rebuilding Iraq
The newly formed Ministry
of Construction and Housing (MOCH) in Iraq is tasked with creating a
code enforcement system and contemporary codes for a nation deprived of
outside contact for many years. ICCF President Paul Myers serves on MOCH’s
Ministerial Assistance Team charged with guiding MOCH in becoming a fully
functioning governmental agency. Using similar experiences and processes
learned from Egypt and Afghanistan, MOCH is increasing its ability to successfully
rebuild and help stabilize Iraq. As part of this effort, the Foundation
has cosponsored and participated in a workshop held at the National Institute
of Standards and Technology to discuss the state of construction in Iraq,
and share successful U.S. tools and techniques. |
